What the World Needs Now: A Timeless Reminder of Love and Faith

Each time I share the title of our current sermon series, my mind wanders to a the catchy tune from 1965 ...What does the world need now? Let's see if the lyrics come to you.

Hal David, known for his timeless contributions to music, including the song "What the World Needs Now is Love," was born into a Jewish-Austrian heritage. This background, rich in cultural history, influenced his artistry, allowing him to weave deep, universal themes into his work. The song, written during a tumultuous time in the 1960s, spoke to a world in desperate need of love and understanding.

Though embraced by many, the song was not without controversy. Some critics argued that its message was overly simplistic in the face of complex global issues. Yet, its core truth resonates with us as believers. We are reminded of the profound love God has for us, as expressed in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." This verse encapsulates the ultimate love and sacrifice.

1 Corinthians 13:13, in simple words, declares paramount importance: "And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love." Hal David’s song echoes this biblical truth, calling us to embody Christ’s love in a broken world. In celebrating love, we fulfill our calling to bring hope and healing to those in our world.
